INTRODUCTIONPunjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh is one of the pioneer institutions of India which came into existence
prior to independence. It was started as Maclagan Engineering College, Lahore and had to shift to India after the partition.
The institution serves the need for technical manpower at higher levels with distinction and its alumni have risen to the
highest levels in their respective fields. It has been serving the society with zeal and has been fulfilling its societal
obligations with distinction ever since its inception. The college endeavours to educate the students to become not only competent
professionals but also excellent human beings, who contribute towards the welfare of the society and towards raising the quality
of life of its people. The recent changes in economic policies of India, ushering in an accelerating growth rate and the ensuing
intense world competition, have thrown new challenges to institutions like PEC, Chandigarh. This college has risen to the
occasion, as always, and resolves to provide talented, skilled and highly competent technical human resources to the industry
and the society . It is in this context that the college endeavours to have a meaningful interaction with industry so that
real life problems may be discussed in the classrooms and solutions attempted in well equipped laboratories of the institute. The
following pages give an idea of the background of the college and some of the activities and the facilities available at PEC,
which has been adjudged as the best Technical Institute of 1994 by the National Foundation of Indian Engineers. The
Punjab Engineering College enters into its Golden Jubilee Year - 1997 in independent India with renewed commitment to work
for objectives it has set for itself. COLLEGEThe Punjab Engineering College was founded as the Maclagan Engineering College, Lahore way back in the pre-partition
days. At the time of the partition of the country in 1947, the college was renamed as "East Punjab Engineering College" and
functioned from the Thomson Engineering College, Roorkee (now known as the University of Roorkee). In the year 1950, the word
"EAST" was dropped and the college was renamed as Punjab Engineering College. Towards the end of December, 1953, the college
shifted to its present premises at Chandigarh and is functioning here since then. This year the PEC enters into its Golden
Jubilee Year in independent India. The college campus extends over an area of 146 acres, situated close to the beautiful
Shivalik Hills range and presents a spectacle of harmony in modern architecture and natural beauty. The campus area has been
divided into various functional zones like the Academic zone for academic buildings and workshops, the Residential zone for
faculty and other staff, the Residential zone for students and the Cultural cum social recreational zone for the students
. The campus provides several essential amenities for community living like a modest shopping centre, a community centre,
a bank, a post office, students' activities centre, gymnasium, swimming pool, playing fields, etc. ACADEMIC PROFILEThe college is affiliated to the Panjab University, Chandigarh and offers a wide range of academic programmes at the
undergraduate, the postgraduate and the research levels. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMEAt the undergraduate level, the college offers 4 year programme leading to the degree of bachelor of engineering (BE)

of Engineering and Applied Sciences also exist.
The curriculum forms the core of the educational process. The college
pays particular attention towards periodic review of the curriculum in order to keep pace with the rapid advances in knowledge
and also to maintain the quality of education.
The college is conscious of its responsibility in the changing techno-economic
environment of the country and, therefore, has recently started a programme in collaboration with the CEDT, on "Electronic
Products Design and Technology". A thrust area project proposal "Establishment of CIM Training Cell" has also been approved
by the AICTE.
On going rapid developments all over the world make it imperative that teachers and working engineers
be continuously exposed to the latest trends in technology so as to enable them to meet new challenges in teaching as well
as in practice. The Punjab Engineering College pays particular attention to continuing education for not only the teachers
but also for all other categories of staff. This is important for providing career growth opportunities as well as to keep
the staff abreast of the latest developments in various fields, thereby reducing obsolescence in their work environment, particularly
in teaching.
The college has taken the life membership of NAFEN Continuing Education Programme, besides being a member
of ISTE. The college also participates in programmes of other professional societies.
In the present scenario of ever
widening horizons of knowledge and interdisciplinary activities, it is essential that experts from different walks of life
come together and join hands for mutual benefits. Active interaction of teachers of technical institutions with working engineers
is of special importance in this context. These measures are essential to boost and sustain the technical and economic growth
of the country. The extension programme of the PEC provides a social interface between academicians and the public at large
in diverse fields.
Research programmes of various departments are also a source of such interaction.
